When is enough enough?

Twice in a month the Supreme Court of Canada has overturned decisions made by judges because they made mistakes in sexual assault law. Both times women were savagely raped, one was unconscious at the time and the other was left to bleed to death in a bathtub. And both times the judges said the women consented.

The Supreme Court of Canada however said the judges got the law wrong and in the case of Cindy Gladue that the court failed to treat her with the dignity and respect she deserved – that her life had value. In both cases our courts failed the victims.

It’s time that judges be mandated to take training in sexual assault law. When will the Senate pass Bill c-337 to make that happen and help send a message to Canadians that our judges must be competent in sexual assault law, and that victims can and should come forward with the confidence that they will be treated with dignity in our courts?
